Brainwave Biofeedback Light Goggle Mind Machines
Devices often called "mind machines" are quite popular these days, with many manufacturers offering
them.
They commonly use flashing light goggles, either with colored or white light
LED's, to stimulate the optic nerves and brainwaves. This creates "imagery" including colors and geometric images. Sometimes they are
used with music or sounds.
Used correctly and scientifically, the devices can "entrain
brainwaves" (like hooking a train car to a train engine that it will
follow). By doing this, you can slow down a person's brainwaves,
creating a state similar to master level Zen or Yoga meditation or hypnosis, or speed up the brainwaves to invigorate.
The rest of this is going to be rather technical but scientists will find it interesting and
understandable (the rest of you might want to order pizza instead of reading
this).
I was a pioneer of EEG (electro-encephalograph) research and development.
An EEG measures brainwaves, their strength and frequency. This led to brainwave
entrainment devices, including the TheraSounds™ and light goggle devices.
The
machines shown above are very sophisticated, even though they are decades old.
It was my first prototype of a manufactured device. The flat black strap in the
foreground is a light goggle device that straps on the head. The device on the
left is a biofeedback device. The one on top of it amplifies the brightness of
the goggles and allows three sets to be used simultaneously.
The device above does many things - electrical stimulation, interface control of
the brainwave entrainment goggles (including triggering them when the user is
not in the target brainwave range), creation of a ganzfeld effect, various
patterning and waveform mixing, preset entrainment timing, and fixed or variable
flashing speeds (including fixed speeds that research indicated was helpful for
addiction treatment).
While
I don't have time to go into all the details right now, I
hope to have some new devices to be able to sell to patients, to use with TheraSounds™, my self hypnotherapy tapes and cds, guided meditation, and
music.
